A broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including those of the respiratory and urinary tracts. While once used orally, it is now more commonly utilized in ophthalmic (eye drop) formulations in India due to systemic side effect concerns, particularly blood sugar abnormalities. It inhibits bacterial DNA replication enzymes.
