Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API)
Tazobactam
Beta-Lactamase Inhibitor
A powerful beta-lactamase inhibitor that is almost exclusively used in combination with a penicillin antibiotic, typically Piperacillin (forming Piperacillin/Tazobactam, often branded as Tazocin). Its role is to protect the penicillin from being destroyed by bacterial enzymes called beta-lactamases, thereby extending the antibiotic's spectrum of activity against resistant bacteria. The combination is a critical treatment for severe infections, including hospital-acquired pneumonia, and complicated abdominal or gynecological infections.
